English taught as a compulsory subject to the student in the school. Today, in Indonesia’s teaching-learning process, English become a subject matter from fifth grade of elementary school up to the last grade of senior high school. Event, some of the students take a class in English course. But in fact, they still have bad capability in English.
The acquisitions of a foreign language in this case called target language (TL) is very different from that of the native language (SL). In studying native language a child much exposed to the language because it is used as a means of daily communication, people around him speaking and provides direct exposure and real situation of learning. It is means that they have no almost unlimited time in the process of learning.
In the other hand, a child learning an foreign language does meet those situations, beside his mastery of the native language systems has a great influence in his attempt to learn the foreign language.
The interference in using an foreign language in mainly caused by the differences between the source language and the target language, which comprise the differences in phonological and grammatical system as well as the lexical and cultural systems. Further more, the writer thought that it is important to carry out a study which will find out the differences between the source language and target language, by doing a contrastive analysis. The results may be able to be used to predict learning problems for the benefit of teaching target language.
